  1. Sort all of your clothes into piles based on how frequently you wear them -- "Always", "Often/Occasionally" and "Never/Infrequently".
  2. Go through the "Often/Occasionally" pile, and then sort them into "Always" or "Never".
  3. Go through the "Always" pile now. Sometimes you accidentally put the wrong garment into the wrong pile.
  4. See which clothes you've outgrown, and give them to Charity -- or even a younger brother or sister.
  5. Go through the "Never" pile now. See which clothes you like that still fit and you know you'll wear. Put them into the "Always" pile. The rest of the clothes THAT ARE IN GOOD CONDITION should go to charity or a younger brother or sister.
  6. Now you know which clothes you're keeping, and which clothes you're not. If you're up to it, organize them according to season. For example, if it's winter, get a small box and stick a label on it that says, "Spring" and put all of your Spring clothes in it. Do the same with the Autumn/Fall and Summer clothes.
  7. If you're up to it, once you've got everything for the other seasons organized, and for example, if it's winter, and you have all of your winter clothes out, try to organize them according to color -- maybe assemble them so they look like a rainbow?
  8. You should be done by now. But, if you want to do the same with your shoes, then assemble them according to height. I usually do height -- for example, I put my tallest pair of boots on the left hand side, and then the shorter ones, and so on. You can do the box thing with this, too, but you don't have to.

  • Give yourself ample time to sort your garments.
  • When redistributing the "Often/Occasionally" pile, remember the point is to thin out your wardrobe. Most of these clothes should end up in the "Infrequently/Never" pile.
  • Anything that is stained, ripped, or worn out gets thrown out!
  • If you just cannot bear to part with a ratty old garment, keep it with the intention of refashioning it into something you can wear. If you don't refashion it within two weeks, toss it.
