You'll Need: Orange and black felt (you can buy it in squares or by the metre or yard); scissors; a ruler or measuring tape; straight pins; orange or black yarn and a sturdy needle with a large hole; a hot glue gun (with adult supervision); ribbon or cord; a safety pin; clear nail polish or white craft glue (optional).

Measure and cut two felt squares the size you want your bag (or use precut squares). Cut out triangular eyes, a nose and a toothy grin from felt in the opposite colour to the bag. Glue the face onto one square.

To make a casing for the ribbon, fold over and pin about 2.5 cm (1 in.) to the wrong side of the felt along one edge of each of the two felt squares.

Thread one-and-a-half arm lengths of yarn into the needle. On both felt pieces, sew the casing with a running stitch. (A running stitch is a simple in-and-out stitch consisting of spaces and stitches of equal length.) Remove the pins as you sew.

With the decorated sides of the bag facing out, pin the two squares along the remaining three sides. Starting below the casing, sew them together with the running stitch too. Remove the pins as you sew.

Measure all around the top of the bag. Add about 15 cm (6 in.) to this measurement and cut two pieces of ribbon this length. Fasten a safety pin onto one end of a piece of ribbon. Starting at the right side of the bag, thread the ribbon through both halves of the casing and back to where you started. Remove the pin and use an overhand knot to fasten the ribbon ends together.

Starting at the left side this time, thread the ribbon through the casing and knot the ends together. If you like, dab a little nail polish or glue to the ribbon ends so they won’t fray. To make the drawstring closure work, pull the ribbons in opposite directions.
